Book Cover Design
Your book cover is often a reader’s first introduction to your book. Effective book cover design should reflect the content, connect with the intended audience, and feel at home within its genre while still standing apart. Mayfly offers custom book cover design services for independent authors, publishers, and organizations. We work with you to develop a distinctive cover that reflects your book and is ready for publication.
Professional Book Cover Design Services
Every book presents a different creative challenge. We begin by learning about your book, its audience, genre, themes, and your vision for the cover. From there, your designer develops original concepts and works collaboratively with you to refine the selected direction into a finished design.
Our cover design services extend beyond the front cover. We prepare complete, production-ready cover files—including the spine and back cover—to meet the specifications of your selected printer or print-on-demand platform. If your project includes publishing support, we can also help coordinate the technical requirements for Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, or another print partner.
What Sets Us Apart
Book Design Is Our Specialty
Book cover design involves more than creating a strong front cover. The design needs to work as a complete package across the front, spine, and back while accounting for trim size, page count, binding, printer specifications, and how the cover will appear at smaller sizes online.
Our designers specialize in books and bring that production knowledge into the design process from the beginning. Each cover is developed specifically for the project, with multiple concepts presented for review and refinement.
A Clear, Collaborative Process
We’ll start by getting to know your book—what it’s about, who it’s for, what you’re drawn to visually, and what you want the cover to communicate. Your designer will use that direction to develop three custom cover concepts for you to consider.
From there, we’ll work together to refine your preferred concept. Once the interior is complete and the final page count is known, we’ll finish the spine and back cover and prepare the files for your printer or publishing platform.

Work Directly With Your Designer
We’re a small team, so you’ll work directly with one of our book designers throughout your project. Your designer will get to know your book, talk through ideas with you, listen to what is and isn’t working, and stay involved from the first cover concepts through the finished design. You’ll also have a dedicated project manager keeping the schedule and details organized along the way.
Need Help With the Rest of Your Book?
Most of our clients work with us on more than just the cover. We can also help with page design, book typesetting, final file preparation, and publishing support for ISBN registration, Amazon KDP and IngramSpark setup, printer sourcing, and other production details.
What Our Clients Say
SVP has completed 28 books in 12 years. Bravo Zulu was our first coffee table book, jam packed with full color photos of WWI and WWII warbird aircraft, 200 lush pages. We’ve done other traditional books with them before, but this was a whole nother thing.
Mayfly took our photographs and our 50,000 words and created a masterpiece. The cherry on top is dust jacket using the photo of the author flying the Red Baron’s 1917 Fokker DR-1, leather helmet, goggles, and white scarf flying above the clouds. This project was fun but seriously challenging. The Mayfly team rolled with the many punches, false starts and speed bumps, and got us across the finish line on time. They’re a pleasure to work with, and they know how to do this stuff right! We will be back.

I’m so happy that I worked with Mayfly on my book. Everyone I talk to about it mentions how beautiful and professional it looks. Working with them on the design was a great experience, as they listened to and incorporated my input and ideas but were not afraid to suggest possibilities I hadn’t thought of as well. I will definitely be working with them again and recommending them to other writers.
