Mayfly Design offers one summer internship per year in the exciting world of freelance book design. The internship is designed to introduce you to the career of being an independent book designer, which of course includes design as well as small business ownership and management. It will provide you with the opportunity to work directly with the owner of the company on active book projects, as well as day-to-day business management tasks. At the completion of the internship, interns receive a $1,000 stipend. School credits may be obtained through the internship if applicable.
Responsibilities:
- set up style sheets for page design projects
- design concepts for new cover design projects
- design back cover and spine
- prep final files for print
- write one original blog post on the topic of book design
- update website project content
- conduct daily office tasks such as invoicing, file management, and communications
Requirements:
- completed junior or senior year, majoring in graphic design
- completed course work in Adobe Creative Suite applications, specifically InDesign
- publication design and layout experience; must provide examples
- proven graphic design sense with a pulse on trends in publication and marketing design
- interest in the book publishing field, creating book covers and formatting book layouts
- strong organization, attention to detail, and self-management skills
Terms:
- must have access to own workstation and Adobe Creative Suite software
- able to work remotely with online access and meet in person weekly
- timeframe of internship begins early June for a duration of 12 weeks
- 12 hours per week during daytime working hours
- potential for continued work based on performance
